Mailhosting - Renaming (Domain Change)

In this article, you will learn:

Changing the Mailhosting domain

If you want to use an existing Mailhosting service with a different domain, you can rename the service. Renaming is also useful if you want to set up another email service for the same domain, for example Webhosting ⧉, WMS ⧉, or WebSite ⧉.

You can change the Mailhosting domain using these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Hosting services Mailhosting.
  3. In the service overview, select the Mailhosting you want to rename.
  4. In the service details table, under Mailhosting renaming, enter the new domain and decide whether you want DNS to be rewritten automatically.
  5. Confirm the options with the Rename button.

The service renaming in the system usually takes up to 30 minutes; the DNS adjustment for the new domain (if it uses WEDOS DNS servers) takes up to 1 hour.

Common problems

Common problems with Mailhosting renaming include:

Conflicting service name

Problem: ERROR: the domain name is already used on the mail server by another service (webhosting) is displayed.

Cause: In our system, it is not possible to run two email services (including Webhosting and paid WebSite) with the same domain name.

Solution: There is a service (or its alias) that already manages the emails for the given domain. If you use this service, also use its emails. If you do not use it, rename it according to the webhosting renaming instructions, or WebSite.

Invalid domain name

Problem: ERROR: Invalid TLD or disallowed level of the Mailhosting domain name is displayed.

Cause: Mailhosting supports only existing 2nd- and 3rd-level domains (e.g. domena.tld or mail.domena.tld).

Solution: Make sure your domain name does not contain disallowed characters, a non-existent extension, or that you are not entering a 4th-level or higher domain (sub.anything.domena.tld).

DNS MX record error

Problem: Mail goes out, but does not arrive.

Cause: The domain probably does not have correctly set MX-type DNS records, or their propagation has not completed yet.

Solution: Check the correctness of the service's MX records, ideally using a diagnostic tool that can also reveal the use of other DNS servers (e.g. Domain diagnostics). If there is no problem here, follow the instructions Emails – Troubleshooting.
