Video Tutorial - Domain Contacts

This video tutorial contains basic information and a procedure for managing domain contacts. You can find detailed information in the complete article Domains – Editing a Contact.

Transcript of the audio track

A domain contact is used to identify a person to the domain registry. The registry typically manages a specific domain extension (for example, national domains such as CZ or EU), or a group of extensions (generic domains). You can therefore use a contact from a given registry only for domains managed by that registry.

You will most often deal with a domain contact from the position of the domain owner. This contact has no effect on the VEDOS customer account details or on the domain billing details.

The following important information can be found for a domain contact:

  • Identifier (ID): This group of characters, typically letters and numbers, is unique for each contact in a given registry. Some registries allow you to choose the contact name freely (if it is not already taken by someone else), while others generate it automatically. Once created, the contact identifier cannot be changed.
  • Name and surname, or Company: Registries follow their own rules for access to individuals and business entities. However, no registry supports a direct change of a person's name or company name - if such a change occurs, you must create a new contact.
  • Email, or phone: Systems send authorization details for the domain to the email address, so we recommend choosing an address that will always be available, including in the event of an outage of the domain to which the contact is linked. In some cases, phone serves as an additional authorization method. The contact's email address and phone number can be changed.
  • Address: Registries verify domain contact addresses. In case of a mismatch, especially with fictitious addresses, they may block domains associated with such a contact. The contact address can be changed.

If you need to change the details of an existing contact, except for its identifier and the person's or company's name, log in to the customer administration and follow these steps:

  1. In the navigation bar, select Domains.
  2. Select the domain from the list to which the given contact is linked.
  3. In the domain details, click the name of this contact.
  4. Using the send password link, have the contact's authorization password sent to your email.
  5. Copy this password from the email into the Contact authorization password field and click the Edit/show hidden data button.

You can now make and save changes to the domain contact, including hiding some of the details supported by the registry.

If the domain contact email is unavailable, return to the domain detail and click the lifebuoy icon to open the customer support form. Enter the domain name and the available email address you want to set for the contact. After sending the request, wait until the VEDOS authorization department contacts you. The usual response time is within 1 business day.

If you want to create a new domain contact, first check which registry the domain is in. You can find this information in the domain details under the TLD item. For example, for the .fun domain, the listed registry is CentralNic.

Then find this registry in the left column of the Domains menu, and under this registry click Create contact. Enter the required details, check the consents, and click the Submit button. This creates a new domain contact. If you want to use it to update the domain owner details, follow the instructions for changing the domain owner.
