You can find a simplified version of this guide in the article Getting Started – DNS.
This article explains the automatic setup of a domain's DNS records for a specific hosting service (webhosting, WebSite, VPS, and others). If you need to redirect a domain (i.e. direct one domain to another domain), follow the instructions in the article Domains – Basic Redirect.
In this article, you will learn:
- What DNS directing to services means
- How to direct a domain quickly (works for domains and DNS records at VEDOS)
- How to direct DNS manually
- Common problems
- Frequently asked questions
DNS directing to services
DNS is a system of records that assigns IP addresses (easy for computers to read) to domains (easy for people to read). A typical domain needs these records at least to determine at which IP address it will find webhosting and where it will find the email server. More information about the basic records can be found in the article DNS – Domain records.
Changes to DNS records are typically reflected within 1-2 hours (regardless of the origin of the change).
These records are located on DNS servers. These servers are often managed by the registrar of the respective domain, but that is not a rule. You may have the domain with one registrar and its DNS records with another.
Changing DNS servers can take up to 48 hours. During this time, DNS queries may be directed to both the new and the old servers.
Directing DNS to services therefore consists of writing DNS records with IP addresses or service names to the selected DNS servers (NSSET).
Quick directing
Quick directing of DNS records is typically reflected within 1 hour.
If you have the domain, DNS records, and target services at VEDOS, you can perform the directing without manual intervention in the DNS records:
- Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
- In the top menu, select the Domains tab.
- Select the domain you want to direct to a service.
- In the left menu, select Service DNS record settings.
- Select the service (or services) to which you want to direct the domain (or subdomains).
- You can direct a domain to at most one arbitrary service.
- You can direct subdomains to services of the same name or aliases Webhosting, Mailhosting, WebSite, or WMS.
- Click the Set button.

DNS settings for Webhosting, WebSite or WMS
Directing to Webhosting, WebSite or WMS will overwrite the corresponding A (or AAAA, if applicable), CNAME and MX records for the domain; other records will remain unchanged. If you have a service set up for a subdomain (for example webhosting sub.domena.tld), you can direct it here separately.
Automatic DNS record setup for Webhosting, WebSite or WMS changes MX record types. If you use mail services from a provider other than VEDOS, consider manual DNS record setup.
Settings for Mailhosting
Directing to Mailhosting will overwrite only the corresponding MX records of the domain or subdomain.
DNS settings for Serverhosting, VPS ON, Cloud
The settings overwrite only the corresponding A records (if available); the others remain unchanged. Further routing within the system is fully in the hands of the administrator of the virtual server or cloud.
DNS settings for WEDOS Global
Directing will overwrite only the corresponding A (or AAAA, if applicable) records. Set the target IP addresses in the WEDOS Global interface according to the external instructions Protection – DNS and target IP addresses ⧉.
Settings to the default page
Directs DNS to the page with the message “The domain is registered.” The settings overwrite only the corresponding A and AAAA records; the others remain unchanged.
Domain redirect
Select this option if you are redirecting email or a website on the domain, but the redirect settings did not automatically direct the domain because of an error. The settings overwrite the corresponding A (or AAAA, if applicable) records if you are redirecting a website, and MX records if you are redirecting email. Other records remain unchanged.
Manual DNS directing
DNS record settings are typically reflected within 1 hour. Changing DNS servers can take up to 48 hours.
Detailed instructions for manual DNS record directing can be found in the article DNS – Domain records.
You will mainly use manual setup when you do not have all services at VEDOS. Typical cases include:
- Domain with another registrar: If the domain uses WENDOS DNS servers, set the DNS records manually according to the instructions in the link above.
- Domain and DNS with another registrar: Set the DNS records manually at your registrar. Setting DNS records at WEDOS will have no effect until you change the DNS servers to ours in the domain settings.
- Webhosting/server hosting with another provider: Set the corresponding A records. Also set AAAA records if your hosting has an IPv6 address. If it does not, remove the original AAAA records.
- Email with another provider: Find out the setup for MX records and possibly also the TXT SPF record from the email service provider.
Common problems
Common problems with directing a domain to services include:
DNS record changes are not taking effect
Problem: After directing the domain to a service, the change was still not visible after 1 hour.
Cause: This problem has two most common causes:
- The domain does not use WEDOS DNS servers. If the domain does not use our DNS servers, any change you make there will not affect its operation.
- The TTL value of the original record is higher than 1 hour. If the TTL parameter value of the original record is 3600 or higher, the record has a lifetime of at least 1 hour and its updates therefore take effect more slowly.
Solution: Make sure the domain uses WEDOS DNS servers (NSSET). In case of a high TTL value, wait longer.
Emails stopped working
Problem: The quick setup overwrote emails from another provider to VEDOS.
Cause: Directing to Webhosting, WMS and WebSite services overwrites both A and AAAA record types and MX.
Solution: Change the MX records manually according to the instructions from the email service provider.
Frequently asked questions
What if I have the domain with another provider?
If you have the domain elsewhere and only DNS with us, you must set the DNS records manually. Automatic setup is performed by the system only when the service is created or renamed (in the case of Webhosting, also when an alias is set up).
