This guide explains how to add IPv6 addresses to a VPS ON server. Instructions for adding IPv6 addresses to VPS SSD can be found in the article VPS SSD – IPv6 addresses.
In this article, you will learn:
- How IPv6 works on VPS ON
- How to enable an IPv6 address in the SunStone interface
- Common problems
- Frequently asked questions
IPv6 on VPS ON
VPS ON servers have one IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 subnet assigned in the default configuration. For each additional IPv4 address, the server system also assigns another IPv6 subnet of the corresponding range.
By adding the IPv6 address in the OpenNebula SunStone interface, you usually make it available to the server immediately. In Linux, you can verify availability with the command ip a.
Enabling an IPv6 address in ON SunStone
By default, a VPS ON server has one IPv6 address enabled. Available addresses can be found in the OpenNebula SunStone administration by following these steps:
- Log in to the OpenNebula SunStone ⧉ administration.
- In the left menu, select Instances Virtual Machines.
- Select your virtual machine.
- In the server details, click the Network tab.

Editing the address range
The network adapter is initially set to a capacity of just one IPv6 address. If you want to add a second or additional address, first increase the network capacity by following these steps:
- In the left menu, select Network Virtual Networks.
- From the list of networks, select the ipv6 network.
- In the network details, click the Addresses tab.
- Select the IP6_STATIC type and click the Edit button.
- Adjust the Size of the range to the desired number of IPv6 addresses.

Adding a new IPv6 address to the adapter
Finally, add the IPv6 address itself to the adapter by following these steps:
- Open the network details according to the instructions at the beginning of the chapter.
- Click the Attach network adapter button.
- Select the IPv6 adapter with available leases and click Attach.

Common problems
Common problems when adding IPv6 addresses to VPS ON include:
Virtual machine does not load
Problem: After editing the virtual network, the VM does not load and an error message Error getting virtual machine appears.
Cause: Due to a large number of connected servers, some changes are applied more slowly.

Solution: Wait a few minutes and refresh the page in your browser. The virtual machine should load. If the message still appears after the browser reloads, wait a little longer again.
The server does not load the new IPv6 address
Problem: The server does not load IPv6 automatically.
Solution: First try restarting the server. If that does not help, set up IPv6 directly on the server according to the instructions for your OS.
Frequently asked questions
What other settings do you recommend for the new IPv6 address?
We recommend pointing the domain to it via an AAAA record. If you use the server as a mailserver, do not forget to set up reverse IPv6 records.
