Webhosting - FTP Accounts

This article covers the management of FTP accounts in the customer administration. If you need to manage files via FTP, read the article Webhosting – File Management.

In this article, you will learn:

Main FTP account

The system creates the main FTP account for webhosting together with the service itself. The login credentials are sent in the email with information about the service setup, and you can later change the password in the customer administration according to the instructions in the section Changing the FTP account password.

The main FTP account name always has the format wXXXXXX, where XXXXXX is usually a six-digit number. In the FTP account overview in the webhosting detail, it is marked with an icon with the letter H.

The main FTP account is the only FTP account authorized to access the root folder of the webhosting. If you need to work with the base webhosting structure folders, or access the restored backup, connect via the main FTP account.

You cannot delete the main FTP account, only block it.

Additional FTP accounts

Additional FTP accounts are intended primarily for administrators of individual websites, especially if you run more than one on the webhosting (via subdomains or aliases). They have access rights only to the www folder, or a specified subfolder.

The main account name always has the format wXXXXXX_identifier, where XXXXXX is the same, usually six-digit, number as the main account; as the identifier you can choose any account name up to a maximum length of 20 characters (lowercase and uppercase letters without diacritics, numbers).

Adding an additional FTP account

Create an additional Webhosting FTP account by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Hosting services  Webhosting (or WMS).
  3. From the menu, select the Webhosting to which you want to add a new FTP account.
  4. In the left menu or in the FTP accounts overview, click New FTP account.
  5. Fill in the table:
    • Login: Enter a custom FTP account name.
    • Directory: Enter the folder to which the account will have restricted access (including subfolders). Once the FTP account is created, you can no longer change this directory. If the directory does not exist, the connection with that account to FTP will fail.
    • Email recipient for password: Check the box and fill in all email addresses that should receive the password for this FTP account.
  6. Click the create FTP account button.

After the account is created, the assigned directory cannot be changed. If the directory does not exist on FTP, the connection with that account will fail.

Deleting an additional FTP account

Delete an additional FTP account by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Hosting services  Webhosting (or WMS).
  3. From the menu, select the webhosting for which you want to delete the FTP account.
  4. In the FTP accounts overview, click the name of the account you want to delete.
  5. Type DELETE into the highlighted field and click the Delete FTP account button.

FTP account management

The system sends the FTP login credentials by email when the webhosting is created (for the main FTP account) to the service billing email, or when an additional FTP account is created to the selected email addresses. These details, except for the password, cannot be changed after the account is created.

If you want to make the account unavailable with those login credentials while you are not actively working with it, you can temporarily block it.

In the customer administration, you can access account management by following this procedure:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Hosting services  Webhosting (or WMS).
  3. From the menu, select the webhosting for which you want to manage the FTP account.
  4. In the FTP accounts overview, click the name of the account you want to manage.

As part of management, you can:

Verification of login credentials

You can find the login credentials directly in the detail of the given FTP account. To connect via FTP, you usually need to know the address of the FTP server and the Login name (login). More information can be found in the article FTP – Login.

The FTP account password can only be found in the setup email. If you do not have this email, you must change the password.

In the FTP account detail, you can also verify the directory to which the account is directed. This directory cannot be changed. If you need to direct the account to another directory, create a new one.

Changing the FTP account password

If you need to change the FTP account password, follow these steps:

  1. Enter the management of the selected FTP account using the procedure above.
  2. In the Change FTP password table, fill in:
    • New password: Enter a new password containing at least 6 characters with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one digit. Clicking the key icon next to the field will generate a random secure password.
    • Repeat new password: For verification, enter the password from the first field again.
  3. Click the apply change button.

For security reasons, the password must not contain the FTP account name, nor these strings: 12345, aaaaa, admin, heslo, passwd, password.

Blocking an FTP account

By blocking an FTP account, you prevent anyone with this account from logging in to FTP without deleting the account. You can unblock the account at any time immediately from the customer administration.

To block or unblock an account, use this procedure:

  1. Enter the management of the selected FTP account using the procedure above.
  2. Click the block or unblock button.

A blocked account is indicated by an icon with the letter B in the FTP accounts overview in the Webhosting detail.

You can also block the main account.

Common problems

Solutions to FTP connection and file management problems can be found in the article FTP – Troubleshooting.

Common problems with FTP accounts include:

Forgotten FTP account password

Problem: We lost the FTP account password and need it resent.

Solution: If you do not have the email with the FTP account password saved anywhere, support cannot resend it to you. Change the password and save it.

Login not working

Problem: It is not possible to log in to FTP.

Cause: The most common causes include a changed password or a deleted folder to which the account is set to access. The account may also be blocked or deleted.

Solution: Follow these steps:

  1. Test the login in the WebFTP client ⧉.
  2. Check that the account and the folder it has access to exist (log in with the main account).
  3. If the account is blocked, unblock it.
  4. If the account has been deleted, create a new one with new login credentials.
  5. Change the password and wait 15 minutes for the changes to propagate.

If none of this helps, contact customer support ⧉. Include the Webhosting name, the FTP account name, and attach a screenshot ⧉ of the error message.

Deleted account

Problem: We accidentally deleted the FTP account.

Solution: Create a new account with new login credentials. The original login credentials cannot be restored.
