WebMail - Alias Email Mailboxes (Identity)

This article addresses sending emails from Webhosting aliases. If you want to set an alias (alternative name) for a specific email mailbox, follow the instructions in Emails – Mailboxes.

The screenshots were taken in the new Elastic template. If you are using the older Larry template, follow the text instructions, or temporarily change the template according to the manual.

In this article you will learn:

Alias Email Mailboxes

If you point multiple domains to one Webhosting using aliases, all these domains share the email mailboxes of that Webhosting. For example, on Webhosting domena.tld with the alias aliasova-domena.tld, emails addressed both to info@domena.tld and info@aliasova-domena.tld will arrive in the same info mailbox.

A variant of an alias email mailbox is an alias of the name instead of the domain; for example, the mailbox info@domena.tld can have the alias ladik@domena.tld. You set such an alias according to the instructions in Emails – Mailboxes, and it can have an identity just like a domain alias.

Mail delivery cannot be separated in this case in any way; you can only filter it. However, you can set which address you will use to send mail from.

Sending Emails Using an Identity

Identity settings are usually also supported by desktop or mobile email clients. If you want to set them there, follow the instructions for the given software.

You must first create an identity for sending mail from an alias mailbox or domain. In the email client WebMail ⧉, you set up an identity by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the WebMail ⧉ client.
  2. Click the Settings button.
  3. Select the Profiles item in the menu.
  4. Click the Create button.
  5. Fill in the form and click the Save button.

In particular, fill in the Display Name and Email fields.

If you check Set as default, the client will prefer this identity over the one created by the actual mailbox and Webhosting name.

You can also set your own automatic signature for the identity in this form.

By setting up an identity, you gain the ability to choose under which name you will send mail. You do this in a new message or reply by selecting Sender.

Common Problems

Common problems with alias identities include:

SMTP error (553)

Problem: The following error is displayed: Cannot add recipient … Sender address Rejected: not owned by user …

Cause: The specified identity is not a valid alias of the logged-in mailbox.

Solution: Make sure the domain is an alias of the correct Webhosting, or that the mailbox really has the corresponding alias set.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have websites from many companies on one Webhosting, and I want to create a separate info mailbox for each of them. How can I do that?

The info mailbox is shared by all alias domains on the Webhosting (e.g., info@spolecnost1.tld and info@spolecnost2.tld). If you want to create a separate mailbox for each company that is not shared with the others, try, for example, info-company1, or another unique mailbox name whose access you will share with the company. Messages sent to the other alias domains can still arrive in this mailbox (e.g., info-company1@spolecnost2.tld), but only the company with the password for this specific mailbox will have access to it.
